Securing Distributed Energy Resources … Inverters & California Rule 21

Stage 2

California Rule 21 requires all new solar and storage installations to have smart inverters that have features previously reserved for larger commercial or utility applications. And these inverters will have to have “secure” TCP/IP communications capabilities to allow for utility control or aggregation control. In this session, will discuss how this is being secured as well as:

  • Who’s affected
  • IEEE 2030.5 protocol with Common Smart Inverter Profile capabilities
  • Mandated network topologies and corresponding vulnerabilities
  • Supply chain considerations
  • Public Key Infrastructure implications
  • California policy relationship to national standard
  • Role of certification and testing
  • Additional challenges
